Several controlled clinical studies have been conducted on the Low FODMAP diet. The largest study of its kind, conducted by the University of Michigan, followed 90 patients with Irritable Bowel. This study, along with several others, showed clinical proof that the Low FODMAP diet can help patients manage their IBS symptoms.
Read MoreThe first step on the Low FODMAP Diet is the Elimination Phase. It is recommended that you eliminate all FODMAPs from your diet for 6-8 weeks. This will give your body a chance to rid itself of these foods as well as to allow your gut flora to reset.
After the elimination phase, you will begin to slowly reintroduce small amounts of FODMAP foods into your diet. The goal of this phase it to discover which foods in particular are triggers. If after 6-8 weeks of the elimination phase your symptoms are not managed, consult with your doctor or registered dietitian, as the your IBS symptoms may not be caused by your gut flora.
The Low FODMAP Diet is not a forever diet. Hopefully, at this point you should know which particular foods flare your IBS symptoms. You can live a normal life by following your modified Low FODMAP diet.
